What glazing does, and why it fails

Glazing putty is the angled bead of compound that beds the glass into the wood sash and seals out water. On a historic double-hung window it's the first line of defense against the Pacific Northwest's rain. Over time the putty dries, shrinks, and cracks away, leaving the glass loose and the wood exposed to moisture, which is exactly how sash rot begins.

Re-glazing at the right moment protects the entire sash. Left too long, the same neglect that started as a little crumbling putty turns into rotted rails and a far bigger repair.
